  • etymology: Picea from pix = pitch (sticky resin); abies = genus name for fir (Abies)
  • short needle-like leaves; ½’ to 1” long; 4-sided, as in other spruces
  • cones large, 4”–6”
  • branchlets and twigs hang downward distinctively (pendulous)
  • popular ornamental tree
